Originally titled “Coimbra”, the song has melody by Raul Ferrão and lyrics by José Galhardo. This song was made public in 1947 in the voice of Alberto Ribeiro, in the film “Black Covers” (“Capas Negras”). Three years later, performed by Amália Rodrigues, the song “Coimbra” became popular throughout the world by her voice. It was from then on that the song became known around the world as Avril au Portugal and April in Portugal.

Nowadays, “Coimbra” has almost a thousand different versions recorded by renowned international interpreters. Some names are Alberto Ribeiro, Amália Rodrigues, Bing Crosby, Caetano Veloso, Chavela Vargas, Julio Iglesias, Liberace, Louis Armstrong, Pérez Prado, Xavier Cugat and Yvette Giraud.
